Speciality Foods was one of the first to bring corn puffs to Zambia along with other South African brands. Their "Chicken Flings" became very popular and later renamed to "Speciality Chicken Flavor," maintaining its place as the most loved snack in Zambia for years.

The Legend Behind Speciality Foods Dominance

From 1962 to the early 2000s, Speciality Foods operated as a market leader, crafting products that filled every shelf across Zambia. The company was, and has always remained entirely owned by Zambian citizens, though the identities of shareholders are never publicly disclosed. It has been said that Speciality Foods may have even played a part in Zambia's independence journey, funding the movement in ways that only a truly national company could.

Their legacy of dominance was unchallenged for many years, surpassing even the current market leader, Trade Kings. In the early years, while Zambia was taking shape as an independent nation, Speciality Foods had already built a name that became synonymous with quality and trust, much greater than the current Trade Kings Group, a company that now seems almost impossible to touch.

What Happened to Speciality Foods? The Sudden End of a Monopoly

The story of Speciality Foods' fall is as interesting as its greatness. The company stoped its operations in the early 2000s, and there are two primary theories behind this shutdown:

  1. The Fire Incident: A fire broke out at their main factory, which was located in Kitwe, where the N.R Investments (a famous hardware shop) stands today. This unfortunate incident caused a significant loss of assets, pushing the company to a point from which it couldn't recover.
  2. Political Factors: Another theory suggests that political interference played a significant role in their demise. Changes in policies, coupled with a lack of support, may have crippled the company’s ability to recover from setbacks.

The collapse of Speciality Foods left a large space in the market, allowing other players like Trade Kings, and other companies to take over the market Speciality Foods once ruled.

The Resilience of Speciality Foods: A Hopeful Comeback

Despite their setbacks, and competitors pushing to make the brand extinct, Speciality Foods has not disappeared completely. The company is closely linked to N.R Investments Ltd, which continues to produce various popular snacks, including naks (Party Naks, Toto Naks), corn puffs (Zoom Balls, Pop Curls), and biscuits (Petit Beurre, Family Biscuits, Wilson Creams). This connection has allowed Speciality Foods to keep its spirit alive even as its core operations stalled.

Since 2020, with the support of N.R Investments, Speciality Foods has been trying to reclaim its place in the Zambian market. Unlike the past, they may not have the power of resources or significant financial backing, but what they do have is a brand name that holds an emotional and nostalgic value for the people of Zambia. This brand name, which even Trade Kings hasn't been able to surpass in legacy, has drawn the interest of external partners, such as Finta Farms, who are hoping to partner with Speciality Foods to help reignite its growth. Together with Finta Farms, a company since 1992, Speciality Foods recently launched a new drinking custard—a unique product meant to be consumed directly. This innovation introduces a fresh concept to the Zambian market that no one has seen before.

The Future of Speciality Foods: A Collective Effort

The story of Speciality Foods Zambia is more than just a tale of a company—it’s a piece of Zambian history that reflects the resilience, vision, and potential of Zambian entrepreneurship. At a time when Zambia had almost no local Zambian owned brands, Speciality Foods emerged as a pioneer, building a brand to serve the nation, with quality brands which were affordable, and make Zambians proud.

Strategic Partnerships: Relaunching Iconic Products

Since 2020, Speciality Foods has partnered with N.R Investments to relaunch "Chalimbana" peanut butter, "Chalimbana" packaged peanuts, and "Speciality Custard Powder". They have also teamed up with Sparkle Investments to produce "Natures Dew" mineral water, and joined forces with Finta Farms to create the unique ready-to-drink "Speciality Drinking Custard".

Now, the question is whether Zambians will help Speciality Foods reclaim its lost glory. The market may have evolved, with new giants like Trade Kings taking center stage, but the heart of the market lies in the hands of the people. Competitors may influence the Zambian market, but Zambians are ultimately the ones who shape it.

The legacy of Speciality Foods reminds us that, with collective support, it is possible for a national brand to rise once again—bringing back the quality, pride, and local identity that once made it a cherished household name.
